Even the winds and the waves obey Him! I’ll tell you something else, those disciples who witnessed Jesus command a raging sea to be silent and still; they know a little something about trusting Him in the storms. Those who have been saved from high seas understand the importance of a lifeguard.

So, I decided to find us some lifeguards—young men and women who have seen rough waters and smooth sailing; young adults who have seen Him walking out to them on the water and who, at other times, had to swim with all they had to reach the shore. Lifeguards who have sailed these seas can give us much needed insight into the storms we face.

This process began many months ago with a simple idea. My husband and I were discussing current culture and all of the new unique issues our teens are facing. As we talked, faces of young adults, mostly college age, raced through my mind. Some of them struggled as they maneuvered through junior high and high school experiences, and some of them literally seemed to grow stronger and stronger as they were faced with challenges and overcame them. Thus, the vision for this book was birthed.

What if we spent time with each of those types of young people and asked them for their perspective on growing up in today’s culture? Would we get the responses that we, as parents and mentors, expect? Or would it be something completely different?

This book is written using material gathered over an eighteen-month period spent in live chat with a group of fourteen college students. These young people come from different backgrounds and were raised by parents with differing sets of value. During the eighteen months in which we worked together, I would submit a topic or a question to the group and they would respond based on their own experience. We talked about many things, and I have divided up the discussions I found most insightful into chapters.

I can’t wait for you to glean from their experiences, victories, and sometimes their failures.  You will be encouraged.  As you embark on this journey with us, I can promise that at points you will feel validated in the stances you’ve taken with your own children and or perhaps challenged to take a new stand. You will also be blown away at times by the insight, discussion, and answers this amazing group of Lifeguards provide.

See you on the beach,
